Conversation with Lázaro Antonio Martínez Duran.

In those televisions sets that you watched (1), what I have wanted to express is a lot of peace, tranquility, and I have also expressed artistic things, from songs, dances, because I make those drawings: politics together with happy things.

I like cities a lot, too; seeing the cities and being able to draw them in front of them. I draw them as if they were in the television. But at the same time I use collage. The collage tells me things, along with the drawing, very happy, instructive things.

From the age of 16 it was that art woke me up. I didn't have any art. I did not draw anything as a child. That was one thing that woke up like that, suddenly.

First I do the drawing and then I calm down looking for the details.

I used to live in the town of Alamar. There was a man who wanted to convert a television set that was in black and white into another that was in color. He was putting reflectors on it. You stood there and you looked red. That color over there was green. They were reflectors that changed colors. I wanted to express that this television was like a reality that was seen in color. That man was electronic. He managed to do it in a Caribe (2), he put reflectors on it so that they could be seen in color.

Those are images that I use, cutting out newspapers, magazines, Bohemias (3). And then I add color to black and white, with crayons and pencils. I had a Caribe first, then a Toshiba, a Sony later and now I have a Taschen. So of all those ideas I base myself on seeing a Taschen in the form of an old television. I put the model of the new one with the old one.

Do you like to do some art? Have you ever dared to do something created by you, inspired from a poster, a city? – he asked me in the middle of the conversation.

I was looking for books, Bohemias. I was in Prado (4) drawing the cities, but I wanted to get loose with the ink. The ink is a bit hard for me to use. I do all of this with colored pencils and crayons.

I am now 38 years old.

I paint characters too. And if one day I start making cartoons (5) I also make them, children's cartoons...

Those drawings of restaurants are created by me, everything that is done in restaurants, people eating, the bartender arriving, the canteens, the dances, the candy stores...but in black and white, black and white catches my attention, it's something that comes to me, I like to make those spaces like that. But they are created by me. I have never done those things – pointing to some sculptures that are exhibited in Riera Studio –, it is hard for me to do them.

Once I came across a full-fledged VW on the street – refering to a car toy que found. I fixed it. I put caps on it to roll and tied the back part so that it would be the same. I put a door. I put a taxi signal and the private plate. I used cardboard because the plastic had split. I like to fix things. What I do not know how to do, I do not get involved. But I love seeing a broken toy car and being able to put it as it was using cardboard boxes. Once, I had an American car that had lost the wooden wheels and I made them with the caps of the pens, I made it convertible. I have never worked wood. I have to have insurance and be able to pay for it. But I do buses. I love to make toy cars with boxes, airplanes. I love that about airplanes, making them on paper. Once, I made a passenger plane. I put it a base similar to the ones that use to came from the Soviet Union, a Cuban passenger plane, with paper, and once I made a helicopter, with cardboard and made it a base underneath.

 

 

I love doing television things and doing them in collage. I like all the topics. The same the cartoons than the political subjects. I don't know how to read a lot of newspapers, but I interpret them better by cutting them out and using the images.

Playing an instrument fascinates me, too. But playing arpeggios – pum, pum pum –, all the songs from the 60s playing them as arpeggios – pin pin pam – I love all that.

My name is Lázaro Antonio. My mom named me. Because her godfather was called Antonio, and Lázaro by the Saint.

1. Refers to the series of objects the artist is currently working on. They are representations of television sets made from discarded cardboard boxes of medicines, food or others products; which he covers with paper to later draw on them and add images as a collage.

2. Caribe was a brand of television sets built in Cuba from Soviet components and very popular in the country from the 1960s to approximately the 1990s.

3. Bohemia magazine is the most important and oldest Cuban magazine founded in 1908.

4. Paseo del Prado, an important promenade located on the street of the same name, one of the most important ones in the Old Havana.

5. Refers to cartoons.

En esos televisores que vistes (1), yo lo que he querido expresar es mucha paz, tranquilidad, y también he expresado cosas artísticas, de cantos, bailes, danza, porque yo hago esos dibujos: la política junto con las cosas alegres.

Las ciudades me gustan mucho también, ver las ciudades y poderlas dibujar delante de ellas. Las dibujo como si fuese un televisor. Pero a la vez uso el collage. El collage me dice cosas, junto con el dibujo, cosas muy alegres, instructivas.

Desde los 16 años fue que se me despertó el arte. Yo no tenía arte ninguno. No dibujaba nada de niño. Eso fue una cosa que se despertó así de pronto.

Primero hago el dibujo y después me pongo con calma buscando los detalles.

Yo antes vivía en el pueblo de Alamar. Había un hombre que quiso convertir un televisor que había en blanco y negro en otro que fuese a color. Le iba poniendo reflectores. Tú te parabas ahí y te veías en rojo. Ese color de allá se veía en verde. Son unos reflectores que cambiaban los colores. Yo quise expresar que ese televisor fuera como una realidad que se viera a color.  Ese señor era electrónico. Lo logró a hacer en un Caribe (2), le puso reflectores para que se vieran a color.

 

 

Esas son imágenes que yo uso, recortando periódicos, revistas, Bohemias (3). Y entonces al blanco y negro le doy color, con las crayolas y lápices. Tuve un Caribe primero, después un Toshiba, un Sony después y ahora tengo un Taschen. Entonces de todas esas ideas yo me baso en ver un Taschen en forma de un televisor antiguo. Pongo el modelo del nuevo con el antiguo.

¿A ti te gusta a hacer algo de arte? Nunca te has atrevido a hacer una cosa sacada por ti, de un poste, una ciudad? - me preguntó en medio de la conversación.

Yo buscaba libros, Bohemias. Antes estuve un tiempo en el Prado (4) dibujando las ciudades, pero quería soltarme con la tinta. La tinta me cuesta un poco de trabajo poderme soltar. Yo todo eso lo hago con lápices de color y crayola.

Ahora tengo 38 años.

Pinto personajes también. Y si un día me pongo a hacer muñequitos (5) también los hago, muñequitos infantiles.…

Los restaurantes son dibujos creados por mí, todo lo que se hace en los restaurantes, la gente comiendo, la cantinera llegando, las cantinas, los bailes, las dulcerías...Pero en blanco y negro, ahí me llama mucho la atención el blanco y negro, es una cosa que me nace, esos espacios me gusta hacerlos así. Pero son creadas por mí. Esas cosas -señalando hacia unas esculturas que se exhiben en Riera Studio - nunca las he hecho, me cuesta trabajo hacerlas.

Una vez yo me encontré en la calle un VW partido completo. Lo arreglé. Le puse tapitas para rodar y empaté la parte de atrás partida para que le quedara igual, le puse puerta, le puse torre de taxi, la chapa particular, con cartulina porque el plástico se había partido. Me gusta arreglar cosas. Lo que no sepa hacer no me meto. Pero me encanta ver un carro partido y yo mismo con las cajitas llegar a ponerlo como estaba anteriormente. Una vez tenía un carrito americano que había perdido las gomas de madera y yo con las cosas de los bolígrafos, lo piqué y lo hice convertible. La madera nunca la he trabajado. Tengo que tener seguro y poder pagarlo. Pero hago ónmibus, me encanta hacer maquinitas en cajitas, aviones, me encanta eso de los aviones, hacerlos en papel. Una vez en la casa hice un avión de pasajeros, le puse una base parecida a las que venían antes de la Unión Soviética, un avión Cubana de pasajeros, con papel, y una vez hice un helicóptero, con cartulina y le hice una base abajo.

Me encanta hacer unas cosas televisivas y hacerlas en collage. Todos los temas me gustan. Lo mismo los muñequitos que los temas políticos. Los períodicos yo no sé mucho leer, pero los interpreto mejor recortándolos y usando la imagen.

Tocar instrumento me fascina también. Pero tocando los arpegios -pum, pum pum-, todas las canciones de los 60 hacerlas arpegios -pin pin pam- me encanta todo eso.

Yo me llamo Lázaro Antonio. Me lo puso mi mamá. Porque un Padrino de ella se llamaba Antonio, y Lázaro por el Santo Lázaro.

Notas al texto

1. Hace referencia a la serie de objetos en la que se encuentra trabajando actualmente. Son representaciones de televisores conformadas a partir de cajas-envases de cartón desechadas de medicamentos, alimentos u otros; las cuales forra con papel para luego dibujar sobre ellas y añadirle imágenes a modo de collage. 

2. Los televisores Caribe, construidos en Cuba a partir de componentes Soviéticos fueron una marca muy popular en el país desde los años 60 hasta aproximadamente la década de los 90.

3. La revista Bohemia es la mas importante y antigua revista Cubana fundada en 1908.

4. Paseo del Padro, importante paseo situado en la calle del mismo nombre, una de las más importantes y céntricas de la zona colonial de La Habana.

5. Se refiere a los dibujos animados.
