Art Brut CUBA

¿por qué volver a interesarse por este país? Porque su naturaleza insular, su historia y su territorio, durante mucho tiempo aislado del mundo por razones políticas y económicas, hacen potencialmente de Cuba un terreno fértil para producciones realizadas al margen de toda influencia artística. Sin embargo, y por estas mismas razones, también es mucho más difícil que en otros lugares desviarse de las normas colectivas y reivindicar la singularidad en materia artística.

Art Brut CUBA propone entonces regresar, cuarenta y un años después, a este evento reuniendo una selección de dibujos y pinturas de estos creadores históricos, junto a obras de artistas contemporáneos del Art Brut, promovida por el Estudio Riera de La Habana, y presentada para por primera vez en la Collection de l'Art Brut. En total, esta vez se exponen 266 obras (dibujos, pinturas, collages, ensamblajes y adornos), así como fotografías.

Lázaro A. Martínez Durán: Los antiversos de la locura.

Sin haberme leído Locura y civilización. Historia de la locura en la época clásica (1) de Michel Foulcault, ni ser especialista en la materia, tendré el atrevimiento de resumir esta patología ―es decir, la locura― en dos tipos, Que serían: la que se busca padecer, un tipo de locura “autoprocurada” (a través de drogas, estilos de vida intencionados) y la que llega de imprevisto, sin desearla.

Son clasificaciones un poco reduccionistas, de escaso fundamento, las cuales ni tan siquiera son las más coherentes con los enfoques abordados sobre el tema en la actualidad, pero que en efecto, me serán útiles para acercarme a algunas de las cuestiones que, en mi opinión, condicionan la obra más reciente de Lázaro Antonio Martínez Durán, artista brut cubano. En la vida de José Grau Brito (La Habana, 1951)[1] emergen algunos de los grandes relatos de la historia sociopolítica de nuestro país: emigración, Operación Peter Pan, UMAP, exclusión social, etc.

 

De cómo los vivió, va contando partes. Algunas todavía muy bajito, para no atraer a “los demonios” que andan todavía sueltos y poder quitarse de encima, de una vez por todas, los ojos que han estado vigilándolo durante toda su existencia.

"ARCHIPELAGO HERVÉ DI ROSA. WORKS FROM MIAM - MUSÉE INTERNATIONAL DES ARTS MODESTES"

 

 

Works by Lazaro Antonio Martinez Duran, Cuban Art Brut artist promoted by Art Brut Project Cuba, are included in the exhibition: "ARCHIPELAGO HERVÉ DI ROSA. WORKS FROM MIAM - MUSÉE INTERNATIONAL DES ARTS MODESTES" at the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology MAAT - Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia (Lisbon, Portugal).

"In the Outsiders pyramid, nourished by popular culture and using familiar materials close to hand which are magnified through imagination and ingenuity, outsider art, naïve art or the art of auto-didacts form an artistic island to which the MIAM and Hervé Di Rosa are particularly attentive. Here they are represented by the works of artists from various horizons and latitudes. Among them is Bernard Belluc (France, 1949), a collector and lover of modest art who initiated the MIAM adventure with Di Rosa. The only works on permanent display at MIAM, the display cases dedicated to Belluc's works tell the story of humanity through the memory of cleverly staged objects, like a pop-up picture book. Patricia, Aldo and Stéphan Biascamano are also among the museum's close friends.

 

Creators of extravagant worlds and objects as strange as they are unclassifiable, they are inspired by the traïna, which every year leads the Biascamano family to live for several months on the beach in makeshift shelters built specially for the occasion to invent a living art made of resourcefulness, imagination, poetry and song.

 

 

The MIAM is linked to another workshop where outsider artists meet and collaborate with artists from the fields of graphic narration, the performing arts, music and contemporary art: La “S” Grand Atelier in Vielsalm (Belgium), to which the MIAM recently devoted a vast retrospective. The outsiders of La “S” include Laura Delvaux (Burundi, 1975), who creates assemblages made of dolls, decorative objects and toys swaddled in coloured thread and rubber bands; and Dominique Théate (Belgium, 1968), whose wrestlers inspired the 3D printed creations of the cartoonist and animated film maker Monsieur Pimpant (France, 1986).

 

Lázaro Antonio Martinez (Cuba, 1983) creates his pieces in Studio Riera, located in Cuba. With an intellectual disability, he has been drawing since the age of 14, a means of expression through which he depicts an ideal world that he can access and share. His televisions made of cardboard broadcast images that the artist has patiently selected and cut out from Soviet propaganda magazines of the 1970s and 1980s that were widely distributed in Havana, where he lives.

 

Ezekiel Messou (Benin, 1971) is the owner of a sewing machine repair shop in a small town in southern Benin. In his back room, hidden from view, he fills school notebooks and A4 sheets with drawings of sewing machines. From his machines, shapes emerge that resemble an imaginary bestiary on which he stamps the mark of his establishment in red or blue ink: "Ets qui sait l'Avenir / Réparation des Machines à Coudre / Le Machiniste."

 

 

Other regions of the world, yet other generations: René Guisset (France, 1930–1991) is a farm worker and the creator of playlets, carousels and characters made of painted wood, wire and other gleaned materials. At the age of 87, Jean Pous (France, 1875–1973) began to engrave stones and pieces of flint, granite and slate that he brought back from his walks, carving faces, flowers and a bestiary of dogs, elephants, fish and goats on their surfaces. André Robillard (France, 1931) designed his first rifle in the early 1960s. Ten years later, under the encouragement of Michel Thévoz, he began to assemble a multitude of materials such as pipes, strings, cartridges, boxes, light bulbs, electric tubes, fabrics and plastics with the help of tape, nails and wire. Inspired by another figure of Outsider Art, Auguste Forestier, the guns were followed by new motifs involving rockets and fantastic characters and animals.
